FAQ

How do I apply for the Swensen Fellowship?

You can submit an application through the Apply tab on our website. You will need to provide your resume, transcript, and cover letter. Applications are due on October 2, 2023.

Do I need a business background?

Absolutely not! We encourage applications from all backgrounds and schools at Yale. The fellowship emphasizes critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and emotional intelligence – if you think this sounds like you, please apply! Former fellows and interns include students from Yale College, GSAS, Jackson, Public Health, and SOM.

What is the recruitment process?

After applying online, you may be invited to participate in a first-round behavioral interview with two of the Fellows. The Director of the Strategic Analysis team (Sidney Scott) conducts the second-round interview, which includes a case. The Head of Strategy (Chad Losee) conducts the third-round interview. Final decisions will be made in early November.

I have never done a case – how can I prepare for it?

We understand that many of our applicants may not have experience with case interviews– do not worry! To help you prepare, we will send across a list of resources to assist first-time casers, after the application deadline. We are also conducting a virtual Casing 101 session to provide an overview of case interviews for beginners, share best practices, and connect you with additional resources. All applicants are welcome to join this session on Wednesday, October 4th, from 12-12:45pm. Register here (a zoom link will be sent upon registration).

Can international students apply?

Yes! International students are welcome to apply. Students in F-1 status may use OPT and/or STEM OPT if the Swensen Fellowship is directly related to their academic field of study. The Fellowship is also eligible for the J-1 visa.

How will the Fellowship contribute to my professional development?

There are several opportunities available for our fellows:

  • Mentorship: Fellows have access to university and team leadership, all of whom regularly provide guidance. You will benefit from feedback, guidance, and coaching.
  • Training: Not only will you sharpen your analytical toolkit on the job, but we also provide access additional learning opportunities (e.g., online courses, conferences, regular team training sessions).
  • Annual Team Retreat: The team organizes an annual retreat with the aim of promoting team culture and learning. The retreat includes targeted skill building sessions, career coaching, and team building activities.
  • Yale Courses: Was there a course you never got to take as a Yale student? Is there a professor you’ve heard everyone rave about? Many fellows take advantage of the opportunity to audit a course while working on the team.

What do folks do after the Swensen Fellowship?

Fellows pursue a range of opportunities post-fellowship, including building careers in education administration (including at Yale), pursuing additional schooling (PhD, law school, MBA), and transitioning into other consulting roles. Some examples of where the Fellows went next: University of Chicago, University of California San Diego, McKinsey & Company, and Harvard Business School.
